As part of our feedback on the proposed Town Scheme, we are calling for significant improvements in Alexandra Road by reducing the amount and speed of traffic and improving the environment at the north end, nearest to the High Road.

Shared space on High Road and redesign of entry to Alexandra Road would create a gateway to our area, reduce traffic levels and make possible a ban on HGVs

Tell us what you think can be done as part of the scheme. Read PMRA’s initial feedback here. A General Meeting is planned for mid November to bring our ideas together before putting them to the council.

One comment on “New Horizons for Alexandra Road”

  1. I have spoken with a number of my neighbours and although some have sent their comments back to the Council, we all agreed that the form for response was entirely inadequate and apparently designed for tick-box assessment rather than real engagement with us, the residents.

However, TFL is providing a budget for improvement to our area and we must try to influence how it is spent.

The aspect which particularly affect PMRA is the junction of Alexandra Road with the High Road. Alexandra Road has suffered much its proximity to High Street (rubbish, parking disputes, urination next to Boots all spring to mind.) Improved landscaping - a statement which expresses a pride in this area - really could improve this. At the recent PMRA meeting we discussed the possibility of coupling finance from TFL with the mayor's current enthusiasm for "pocket parks". The scope for such a project attached to this junction (including Martin's Walk) seems really exciting and I would like to support it.

The key thing really, is that the improvements should continue down Alexandra Road so that we avoid giving the message, "This is a dirty little overlooked back street off the High Road, where anyone can act as they please."

I think it would be really helpful if the changes could discourage car traffic from Alexandra Road and prevent lorries from using it at all. This seems particularly important as the built up pavements will encourage pedestrians to claim precedence. ((It is already a pretty dangerous crossing.) There is, however, likely to be knock on effect and we should be careful that this does not put greater pressure on Hornsey Park Road. We need to get the council to adopt the spine road in preference to HPR as part of this refurbishment.
