Hard to believe but 30 years ago, Turnpike Lane was one of the best places in North London for ‘exotic’ food.
A survivor of that time, The Penang Satay House (Malaysian) remains a firm favourite and can now count my two young sons as fans. We are clearly not alone in our appreciation – the restaurant continues to pick up good reviews and was full to overflowing when we ate there two Fridays ago. Expect great food, good service and keen prices. While not trendy by the standards of the 2010s, it proves that there is no reason to go very far from our corner of N8 to have an enjoyable night out.
With good house wine, you could eat and drink well for around £15/head.
